My whole life was gray- gray skies, gray marshes, and gray bogs, the result of continuous rain. . Even the people were gray, from the lack of sunshine and happiness. Everyone and everything was gray except for me. I wished for a single ray of light. But the thing I needed to see most was a rainbow. Rainbows- they were filled with color and made from light. I longed to see a rainbow, just once. The next day, everything changed.
I woke up to find something warm and wondrous soaking into my skin. I stretched lavishly, basking in the warmth. The substance was like gold spun into the air. I threw up my window open and saw a tiny sliver of the sun shyly peeking out of a cloud. Then the cloud gave way, exposing the sun’s blinding radiance. It shined on the puddles of rain, revealing a rainbow! It was beautiful. No, beautiful didn’t sound right, its gorgeousness was ineffable.
I had to get close to the rainbow.
I went so close to the rainbow that I had to crane my neck as far as it could go to gaze at its full height. I reached my hand out so I could touch it. The rainbow was solid. I threw my leg over it, just like I would get onto a horse, and heaved myself until I was scaling the rainbow. Up, up, up. Climb, climb, climb. Finally, my arms aching and my legs sore, I clambered up onto the peak of the rainbow. I looked up. The sky was a sapphire blue. I looked down and saw my town. It was the same, monotonous, gray, and downcast. I knelt and uncovered a fishing net. It was light yet strong, made from threads of sunshine.
I threw the net up on impulse. The net captured the blue sky quickly. The yield fell back into my hand, and I goggled at it. But then, it slipped out of my hand and fell, escaping from my grip. But then the most amazing thing happened.
The net released the blue sky and smothered up the smoky gray. Then, the net wound itself into a tight little ball, and I realized- it was the sun. A golden ladder appeared from the rainbow, and I clambered down. Back on the lush green grass that had been marsh just minutes ago, I saw the residents of my village gaze in fascination.
My life has always overflowed with light ever since I climbed the rainbow.
